Is your car really just a big purse?

So, is your car really just a big purse? Do you keep Kleenex, pens and pencils, a first-aid kit, a good book or magazine, the stuff you have to take back and forth to work everyday, snacks and water bottles, and more in there, just in case. If you answered yes then your car is just a really big purse and like every purse it probably needs to be cleaned out from time to time.

Here are a few tips to help you keep the clutter organized and in control.

1. Empty it.

Take everything out. Shake out the dust from your purse. Vacuum out the empty car.

2. Sort the stuff.

It’s always good to have a couple bags handy for this: recycling and trash come to mind. Also a “put away” container if applicable. If you have minions nearby to help you with the car, so much the better.

3. Ditch the stuff that don’t matter.

Ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I really need it?
  • Do I really use it?
  • Does it need to be stored here?
4. Put away the outliers.

If you’ve got stuff that doesn’t belong in your trunk or your handbag, put it where it goes. Do not pass go, do not collect $200 — until it’s found its new home. The “put away” bag or box is only a temporary holding station.

5. Replace the good stuff.
  •  consolidate travel snacks, emergency equipment, extra clothing, maps, etc.
  • Only the things that you truly need and use in this location get to go back. Try to arrange them in ways that are orderly and compact. Containers, drawer dividers, and pouches are your friends.
6. Breathe more easily.

Now that your stuff’s together in an organized way, the carpool or the grocery shopping trip should be easier to pull off with grace and style. Hopefully, you found some loose change or a gift card — and hopefully, not a bill — and go reward yourself for a job well done!
