Oil Check at Every Other Fill-up

One point we want to drive home to our readers is that motor oil truly is the lifeblood of your vehicle. Too many vehicle problems and breakdowns are caused by poor oil habits. One habit that we should all pick up is to check our oil every other time we get gas. Even in newer vehicles, your oil level is going to get low, it is just a matter of time. So, every other time you find yourself at the pump, just follow the following procedure for an accurate reading of your oil level.

  1. Warm the oil by running your engine or driving your vehicle for around 15 minutes.
  2. Park on level ground, turn off your vehicle, and let it sit for 15 minutes to allow your oil to settle back into the oil pan.
  3. Open the hood and remove the dipstick. Wipe the dipstick clean with a rag or paper towel. Then, reinsert the dipstick and push it all the way back into its housing. Then, remove the dipstick again and check to see where the oil left a mark on the dipstick. If your oil is not around the full mark, then your vehicle needs more oil.
  4. Add the type of motor oil your owner’s manual suggests if your oil is low.
